There are two medicines that may be effective in treating Male-Pattern Baldness. These are Finasteride and Minoxidil.

This medicine is available on private prescription from your Dr. Finasteride comes in a tablet form and administered on a daily basis. The mechanism of Finasteride is that it prevents the hormone Testosterone being converted to DHT. DHT makes the hair follicles to shrink, by inhibiting its production. It allows the hair follicles to become normal size and thus allowing it to produce stronger hair.

Previous studies have indicated that by using Finasteride some people have experienced an increase in the amount of hair (hair count). Regular use of Finasteride may start seeing significant signs between 3 to 6 months. If treatment is stopped the balding process will resume again within 6 to 12 months. Side effects are uncommon however 1 in 100 men who takes Finasteride experience a loss of sex drive.

Minoxidil is available as a lotion and you rub it on your scalp every day. Minoxidil is available to purchase from your Pharmacy. In some men it can cause hair regrowth and can prevent further hair loss. It comes in two strengths 5% and 2%. Evidence however does show that 5% is more effective, but can also cause more side effects such as dryness or itchiness of the applied area.

Minoxidil also needs to be applied for several months before one starts to see any effect. If stopped using then the balding process will resume again. Any new hairs that regrow will fall out after about 2 to 3 months.

Minoxidil is the only product to treat female-pattern baldness. It can help to regrow hair in around 1 to 4 women and it may slow or stop hair loss in other women. Generally women respond more positively to Minoxidil than men. Also need to use this product for several months before noticing any effects.

Creams and Ointments used to treat Alopecia Areata, but long term benefits are not known. These are prescribed for a three month period. Some Corticosteroids used are as follows

These are available as a Gel form or as a lotion. However using Corticosteroids can cause side effects e.g. thinning of the skin and can cause acne.

Another alternative method is to replicate hair with a tattoo. This is known as Dermatography and produce long term results. It is an expensive option but can only be used to replicate short hair.

Wigs can also be another option for the treatment of hair loss.

These are made from acrylic and can cost from anywhere from £50.00 to £350.00.These wigs only last 6 to 9 months. Advantage is that it is easier to look after than wigs made from real hair because they don’t need styling.
