HAIR TRANSPLANT OPTIONS

The 3 most common hair transplant methods that are used are as follows:

SCALP REDUCTION

Scalp reduction was one of the earliest methods used. In this method scalp from the balding area is surgically removed. In most cases the crown and the top of the head. When the area is removed then the area that bears the hair is stretched over to cover and replace the area that has been removed. Today this method is seldom used or is used along with other more advanced procedures that are available such as FUT or FUE.

FOLLICULAR UNIT HAIR TRANSPLANT (FUT)

This method of transplant has been one of the most popular and successful methods of transplant. This is due to its natural look and also allows the hair to function in a natural manner, for this particular method, very high resolution stereo microscopes are used which in return helps to assist in lowering the risk damage to the hair. In this procedure a strip is removed from the donor area and then the hair is dissected into smaller follicular units and then inserted into the balding area. With this method there is a scar left behind, which is visible especially when the hair is short. The cost of this procedure is expensive depending on the number of grafts required.

FOLLICULAR UNIT HAIR EXTRACTION (FUE)

This method of transplant is similar to FUT, but in this instance the removal of a strip from the donor area is not required. In this procedure individual hair follicles are extracted from the back or side of the head and then inserted into the balding area. Individual follicular units containing 1 to 4 hairs are removed under local anaesthetic; this micro removal uses tiny punches of between 0.6mm and 1.0mm in diameter. The surgeon then uses very small micro blades or fine needles to make small puncture in the balding areas where the new hair follicles will be inserted, in a predetermined density and pattern to promote a realistic hair pattern. FUE takes place in a single long session or sometimes in multiple small sessions. On average a long session can last anywhere up to 8 hours. With FUE this procedure does not leave a scar in the donor area. This treatment is also expensive depending on the number of grafts required.

CLONING

This is the latest research. This technique involves taking small amounts of a person’s hair cells and then multiplying them and then injecting into the bald areas. The science behind the technique is new and more trials are needed before it can be performed.
