What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty- Is commonly known as a Nose Job. It is a procedure for correcting or reconstructing the shape of the nose. This may be because you are unhappy with the way it looks or want to reshape it after an injury. Every individual inherit the shape and size of their nose from their parents and by the age of 16 years the nose stops growing and has developed fully.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

There are a number of different types of nose reshaping operation. The exact procedure will depend on the desired treatment. Depending on the procedure the operation may take place under a general or local anaesthetic.

The two main techniques used are called “Open” or “Closed” procedures. Open meaning that some of the cuts that are made are outside the nose, whereas closed means that all the cuts are made inside the nose. The procedure normally involves separating the soft tissue that lies on top of the nose from the bone and cartilage underneath. Depending on the operation, the surgeon might break the nose bone and reposition it or reshape the cartilage.

Nose operations are most commonly carried out to

  1. Alter the hump at the bridge of the nose
  2. Reshape the tip of the nose
  3. Alter the length of the nose
  4. Alter the width of the nose
  5. Alter the width of the nostrils
  6. Restructure and Reposition the nose after an injury
  7. Open up the nasal airways to help breathing.

Bridge

If the Bridge of the nose is being operated on, then the bone and cartilage is causing the hump. The nose may then be broken to allow the remaining piece of bone to be moved closer together, resulting in narrowing of the nose.

Tip

In this instance the cartilage that makes up the tip-support needs to be removed or reshaped. This procedure is done through the nostril or by making small cuts in the bit between the nostrils.

Width

By breaking or repositioning the side nasal bone, the Consultant can reduce the width of the nose.

Length

The Consultant can adjust and reduce the central structure of the nose which is known as the Septum, to shrink the tip and allow the overall length of the nose to become reduced.

Why Do Rhinoplasty?

  1. To give you confidence in your appearance.
  2. To allow you to breathe more easily if suffering from breathing difficulties.
  3. To allow you to achieve the appearance that you dreamed off.

How long does it take?

This depends on the procedure you are looking to have. On average it takes between 2 to 4 hours.

How much time do I need to take off from work?

As with many different types of operation all patients differ with recovery times. It’s usually recommended about 2 weeks due to swelling around the nose and eyes.

Difference between Open and Closed Rhinoplasty?

In Open Rhinoplasty the Consultant makes small incision in the Columella (skin that covers the part of the nose that separates the nostrils) as well as some internal incisions. This one external incision allows the Consultant to lift the skin and alter the size and shape of the cartilage underneath. Closed Rhinoplasty is the term used to describe surgery that is performed via small incisions inside the nose.

Will I be left with scars?

Most incision are made inside the nose, so there will be no scarring. Depending on the procedure you may have tiny scars in the Columella but these are rarely noticeable to the naked eye.

Risks?

The risk factors are the same with any other operation that involves general anaesthetic. However your Consultant will explain to you in detail before the operation of the procedure he will be performing. So if there are any questions that needs to be addressed or concerns you may have you have the right to ask the Consultant.

Long term precaution?

We recommend avoiding contact sport for at least 3 months after the procedure i.e Football, Rugby etc. Generally treat your nose with the same care that you generally would do

Cost of Rhinoplasty?

In United Kingdom it is around £3,700 to up to £4,500 depending on what procedure you require. Our Clinic in Turkey offers a much cheaper option due to its low cost of running operations. Please contact us for further information.

Age limits?
